TECHCON 2010: Technology and Talent for the 21st Century

Poster Instructions

  1. All paper presenters are expected to present a poster. Failure to present a poster will adversely affect the judging of your presentation.
  2. Posters and demonstrations will be set up in TechFair, which is located in the Rio Grande Exhibit Hall on the lower level. Set-up is from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 12, 2010. Dinner for students will be provided during poster set-up. Please note the start time when making your travel arrangements.
  3. Please stay close to your poster to discuss your research during the TechFair session immediately following your paper presentation. The TechFair schedule is as follows:
    TechFair Session Date and Time
    TechFair Session #1 (Paper Sessions 1 - 4) 10:40 - 12:10 pm, Monday, September 13
    TechFair Session #2 (Paper Sessions 5 - 8) 3:50 - 5:20 pm, Monday, September 13
    TechFair Session #3 (Paper Sessions 9 - 12) 10:40 - 12:10 pm, Tuesday, September 14
    TechFair Session #4 (Paper Sessions 13 - 16) 3:50 - 5:20 p.m., Tuesday, September 14
  4. Posters should remain up throughout TECHCON to be available for judging and discussion. Please remove posters immediately following TechFair Session #4. Materials not removed by 7:00 p.m. will be discarded.
  5. Each booth contains space for three poster displays (one on the back wall and one on each of the side walls). Space assignment number corresponds to your paper number (e.g., 1.1, 1.2, etc.).
  6. Posters will be displayed on 4' x 8' tack boards (horizontal orientation; see attached diagram). Poster materials may be attached directly to the tack boards using Velcro or push pens which will be provided.
  7. A title board will be provided for each poster display; title boards are 8.5 x 11, portrait orientation. Title boards will be placed in the upper corner of the board nearest the aisle and must be left in that position so that attendees can locate posters easily. A sample title board is attached
  8. Each poster display should include one 8 ½ x 11 slide (or equivalent) that is a short bio of the presenter (not your resume) and a photo. Please include technical interests and career goals.
  9. Each poster should include one 8 ½ x 11 slide (or equivalent) on technology transfer. A sample slide is included in the f ile.sample slides
  10. 10. A demonstration is defined as a presentation at TechFair needing space and provision for a laptop or other equipment to be set up during the TechFair session associated with the presenter's paper presentation. If you need this accommodation, please contact Lee Ann Clewell, (919)941-9444 or via e-mail to techcon@src.org) to ensure appropriate arrangements. Please do not request demonstration space unless you need it as part of your poster presentation. If all you need is space for a laptop computer, we can accommodate that in a poster space, but we do need to know power requirements for laptops (e-mail techcon@src.org with paper/poster number and request for power outlet for a laptop).
SRC will provide the items listed below for each demonstration:
    • 1 - 4' x 8' tack board (the booth wall, horizontal orientation)
    • 1 tall round table
    • 115 volt, 20 amp, 4 outlet power
  11. Neither SRC nor the Renaissance assumes any liability for equipment left in TechFair. Your poster must be displayed throughout TECHCON. Hardware and other equipment (including power strip/serge protector) must be provided by the presenter. Equipment may be shipped to the hotel. AV equipment may be rented from the Renaissance at the presenter's expense. Please contact Lee Ann Clewell, (919)941-9444 or via e-mail to techcon@src.org, for shipping information or to arrange equipment rental.
  12. Stapler, scissors, rulers, markers, push pens, and Velcro will be available for your use. No colored paper or other supplies will be provided.
  13. Judging will include both the paper and poster presentations. Awards will be presented at the dinner on Tuesday evening. Judging Criteria is a separate file in the Author's Kit. You may be interested in some comments from previous judges:
    1. Posters should speak for themselves.
    2. Numbered pages make easier reading. (Does it go across or down?)
    3. Students should be present and offer a brief overview on more than one level.
    4. Emphasize presentation - demonstrate a clear purpose and result or conclusion.
    5. Include technology transfer achieved and/or planned (see sample slides above)
    6. Less text, more diagrams (pie charts, bulleted text)
    7. Color and readable fonts make more interesting presentations.
