Overview

GRC research tasks address technological challenges identified by the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS). The Roadmap, which identifies technologies expected to be required by the industry within specific timeframes, outlines research efforts by organizations and sponsors within industry, government and universities. It does not seek to limit the scope of research but is intended to encourage creative approaches to advanced technologies.

The International Technology Working Groups (ITWGs) describe "top difficult challenges for continuously improving performance and increasing integration, and/or decreasing manufacturing cost." To emphasize their importance, some were selected as Grand Challenges and were classified into two categories: Enhancing Performance and Cost-effective Manufacturing. The challenges are summarized according to the Near Term and Long Term timeframes of the Roadmap.

The ITRS is updated approximately every two years. GRC classifies each new task when initially funded, to the then current edition of the ITRS.

While links to the associated GRC research taks are only displayed to signed-in members of the GRC research program, all website users have access to the text of the grand challenges.
