2024 Aristotle Award
Presented to Dr. Boris Murmann, University of Hawai'i at Mānoa
Professor Boris Murmann excels in enriching students' learning experiences, blending theoretical knowledge with practical application. He started to apply Machine Learning and AI to mixed-signal circuits in the early 2000s and influenced the entire integrated circuit design society. Today, his famous ADC survey is treated as the "North Pole" to thousands of researchers studying mixed-signal circuit speed, resolution, and architectures.
Over his career, Prof. Murmann has guided over 50 Ph.D. students to graduation, demonstrating his commitment to nurturing future engineers and researchers. Alumni like Dr. Drew Hall, a notable professor in bioelectronics and sensor technology at the University of California, San Diego, and Echere Iroaga, Co-Founder and COO of Encharge AI, Inc., highlight the success of Murmann’s mentorship.
Since 2004, he has worked as a consultant with numerous Silicon Valley companies to influence their circuit design and enable many early commercial products, including smartphones and edge devices.
Beyond the classrooms at Stanford and the U. of Hawaii, Prof. Murmman has contributed tremendously to the IEEE Solid-State Circuit Society (SSCS) PICO Open-Source Chipathon to enable pre-college students, undergraduates, and geographical regions that are underrepresented within the IC design community to have ready access to hands-on design and tape out experiences. Prof. Murmman has been working on many tasks in GRC AIHW and AMS-CSD programs and has published over two hundred publications. He is also an IEEE Fellow, recipient of the Friedrich Bessel Research Award in 2012, and the Agilent Early Career Professor Award in 2009.
