SRC’s Larry Sumney Honored with Alumni Award for Achievement from Washington & Jefferson College

SRC President and CEO Presented with Prestigious Award at Alumni Weekend

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Nov. 26, 2012 – Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC), the world's leading university-research consortium for semiconductors and related technologies, today announced that President and CEO Larry Sumney has been awarded the Alumni Award For Achievement by his alma mater, Washington & Jefferson College.

“Mr. Sumney is a wonderful example of the type of leader that Washington & Jefferson College produces,” said Dr. Tori Haring-Smith, President, Washington & Jefferson College. “He has spent his entire career advancing the boundaries of science and helping others to learn, grow and develop in both academic and professional environments. It is an honor to recognize Mr. Sumney for all of the valuable work he has done in the positions he has held and for the impact it has had for our College.”

The Alumni Award for Achievement is presented each year to a graduate of Washington & Jefferson College who has reached the top echelon of his or her field and has brought recognition to the College. Sumney was presented with the award at the College’s annual Homecoming Dinner in late October.

Sumney has enjoyed a long and distinguished career since graduating from Washington & Jefferson College. He received his Bachelor of Arts in physics in 1962 and earned his master's in engineering administration and completed the course work toward a doctorate of science in systems engineering and mathematics at George Washington University.

In his professional career, Sumney has worked at the Naval Research Laboratory, the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense Research and Engineering, and in 1982, was named President and CEO of SRC. In 1997, he became Chairman of the Board at MARCO, and in 2005 he became Chairman of the Board for NERC and Chairman of the SRC’s Education Alliance (SRCEA), all of which are wholly-owned subsidiaries of SRC.

In addition to his work experience, Mr. Sumney has served on the EECS Department Advisory Board of the University of California, Berkeley, on the University of Illinois College of Engineering Advisory Board and the North Carolina State University Engineering Advisory Board. Additionally, he has served on the Director's Advisory Board of the National Security Agency. SRC was also the recipient of the National Medal of Technology in 2007.

Additionally, Mr. Sumney is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the AAAS, and was a recipient of the IEEE 1998 Frederik Philips Award, together with Dr. William Holton and Dr. Robert Burger both with SRC.
