Invited Proposals for JUMP Undergraduate Research Initiative (URI) - Due June 29, 2018
Program Objectives and Description
The Joint University Microelectronics Program (“JUMP”), a consortium of industrial participants and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (“DARPA”), (the “Consortium”), solicits proposals from U.S. universities for collaborative programs to expose students to a variety of career opportunities as well as the benefits of advanced degrees in areas of relevance to microelectronics and our members:

JUMP Undergraduate Research Initiative (URI) will be an academic year long program. The program will encourage US citizens, diverse, and gender candidates. The program combines a structured undergraduate research experience with student mentorship. In addition, increase retention of students interested in majors relevant to the Semiconductor Industry and the number of STEM students from these target groups progressing to graduate school programs. It should allow opportunities for JUMP members to network and/or mentor JUMP URI students.
Program should provide rigorous and engaged training for undergraduates in the following areas of study:
Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Bioengineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Computational Neuroscience, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Neuroscience, Material Science, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, and Systems Engineering
Approximately 4 universities will be selected with approximately $30K/year annual renewal up to 5 years with a detailed program evaluation at year 3. $2500 should be set aside yearly for student development (enrichment workshops, lunch and learns, poster sessions, presentations etc.). Stipends of $2000 - $2500 are to be awarded to the students to work a minimum of 5 hours a week in the lab for the academic year as part of a JUMP URI cohort (10-13 students at a single university). In addition, JUMP URI students are expected to submit an abstract of research completed during the academic year for consideration for TECHCON, an SRC student conference that showcases top student talent from SRC programs.
Proposal Guidelines
JUMP URI Proposals are limited to 3 pages total, using a minimum of 10-point font size, and must be submitted via the SRC web-site by June 29, 2018 no later than 3PM EDT/ 12PM PDT. Submissions not in compliance with all guidelines will be excluded from consideration.
Please include the following identifying information in your Proposal:
Objectives and Results: What do you plan to accomplish in the 5-year period. Please specify clearly what is expected to be accomplished in the first 3-years of the center’s charter. What are the anticipated outputs of a successful effort? What degrees/disciplines will you emphasize in your cohort from the list above? How do you plant to establish a pipeline of students to graduate schools at SRC programs/institutions and or researchers?
Funding Request and Participants: Plan for yearly budget should include estimate of the number of students, stipend award (range between $2000-$2500/student) and $2500 student development allotment.
Funding Leverage: Please illustrate how leveraged funding will be helpful towards JUMP URI goals and objectives.
Research Disclaimer: JUMP URI students are not expected to work on JUMP research, however, some of your universities are JUMP research universities. Click here for a list of participating JUMP universities and professors. Your cohort can consist of all females, all URM, all a certain discipline or a mix of gender, URM and discipline as long as it is your best idea for how your program would help accomplish JUMP URI goals. Please note, submit only your idea.
Measures for success
- Percentage of diverse students, i.e., women and/or underrepresented minorities
- Percentage of students with permanent right to work in the US or US citizenship
- Percentage of students meeting preferred GPA of 3.0/4.0
- Number of students participating in academic year program
- Percentage of completing students continuing to graduate school or hired into semiconductor industry
- Retention rate among all participating students
- Strong link between student research projects and the semiconductor and information and communications technology industry overall
- Timeliness in submitting required data (student reporting, and overall program information)
Contract Awardees will be expected to:
- Drive and deliver meaningful annual project reviews and topical workshops.
- SRC will require an initial set of information on each student (by September 30) and an update of student personal information mid-year (February 1) and year-end report (July 1).
- Interact with JUMP members.
- Submit abstract to TECHCON for poster presentation of sponsored research.
- Provide student development for JUMP URI students
- Submit reports required for program compliance.
- Put forward a top-tier research agenda while also being mindful of the STEM-education and employment initiatives of JUMP members.
