1989

TAB Summer Study focuses on redefining research goals; SEMATECH Centers of Excellence are established; Larry Sumney discusses semiconductor research before a congressional committee.

Highlights

  • More than 600 graduate students, including 34 with SRC Fellowships, carry out research under SRC contracts. Of the students receiving degrees after working on SRC research, 70% gain employment in the SRC industry-government-academic community, many acting as agents for technology transfer by continuing their research.
  • Larry Sumney provides congressional testimony on semiconductor research and government support.
  • SEMATECH Centers of Excellence (SCOEs) take root in Arizona, California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, and Texas.
  • BoD and ETAB join in SRC Strategy Forum to review progress and provide guidance for the future SRC agenda, focused on "Silver Bullets and Silver Buds," and conclude that the underlying silicon integrated device technology must remain the core mission of the SRC.
  • TAB Summer Study looks at updating the SRC research goals now targeted at year 2001.
  • SRC’s Bill Holton edits an IEEE special issue on cooperative research.
